Online grooming is when a person (usually older) tries to set up a sexually abusive situation with someone else using things like facebook, e-mail, cell phone, etc. Groomers try to establish a relationship with their victims. Usually they want to be seen as a trusted or respected peer or as a caring and understanding older person. Sometimes they pose as someone who needs help or is in distress.
They talk to the victim alot and try and find out as much information as possible about them. They will try find out things like what they look like, how old they are, where they live, their cell phone number, when they are home alone, if they are emotionally valnerable, if they are neglected and if plying them with gifts, drugs, alcohol or money is an option. Some have even used a virus to turn on their web cam without them knowing so they can get photos of them.
Groomers could use threats or blackmail about thing like their family or pets to get them to do exactly what they want. They could also try to isolate them from their family and friends by telling them that they don't care or don't like them and that the groomer likes them better.
Groomers can expose their victim to inappropriate and illegal sexual material. They can do this by sending them things like pornographic images, videos, drawings and animations, text messages and stories. Some of these things will be age restricted or all together illegal. If it isn't then it could still be offence, upsetting and traumatizing for some people.
If this becomes a problem for you or become suspicious of someone online, then tell someone you trust straight away. They will help you.
